2026 Renault Twingo E-Tech: The Affordable Electric City Car Europe Has Been Waiting For

Renault has officially revealed the next-generation Twingo E-Tech, a fully electric reinvention of one of Europe’s most beloved small cars. Designed to capture the spirit of the original 1990s Twingo while embracing a new electric future, this compact EV aims to bring electric mobility to the masses — all for under €20,000 (about $23,000 USD) before subsidies.

With city-friendly proportions, playful styling, and surprising practicality, the 2026 Renault Twingo E-Tech could easily become one of the most popular entry-level EVs on the European market.

Retro Design, Modern Personality

The new Twingo E-Tech borrows heavily from the original 1992 Twingo’s cheerful aesthetic. Renault has recreated its quirky, friendly face with rounded LED headlights and half-moon light signatures, while keeping proportions tight and upright.

At just 149.1 inches long and 58.7 inches tall, the Twingo E-Tech is smaller than most hatchbacks on the road — even shorter than the new MINI. Despite its compact size, it feels roomy thanks to a smart layout and high roofline, making it ideal for tight urban environments.

Inside, the Twingo E-Tech continues the fun vibe. Renault teamed up with French composer Jean-Michel Jarre to create a unique welcome sound when you start the car — a small but charming touch that reinforces the car’s personality. A 7-inch digital cluster and 10-inch central touchscreen dominate the dashboard, surrounded by plenty of physical buttons for easy use while driving.

Clever, Space-Saving Interior

Renault Twingo

Although small, the new Twingo E-Tech makes brilliant use of space. The rear bench features two independent sliding seats, each adjustable by up to seven inches. Both rear seats and the front passenger seat fold completely flat, allowing the Twingo to carry longer items than you’d expect in such a compact vehicle.

Storage space totals 12.7 cubic feet in the trunk, expanding to over 35 cubic feet when the rear seats are folded. There’s even under-floor storage, making this little EV far more practical than its size suggests.

Electric Powertrain and Range

Underneath its cute exterior, the Twingo E-Tech uses Renault’s new AmpR Small platform, shared with the upcoming Renault 4 and Renault 5 EVs. Power comes from a single front-mounted electric motor producing 82 horsepower and 129 lb-ft of torque — plenty for zipping around city streets.

Renault claims a 0–62 mph (0–100 km/h) time of 12.1 seconds, but more importantly, the car reaches 31 mph in under 4 seconds, making it nippy in traffic.

The 27.5 kWh LFP battery provides a range of up to 163 miles (262 km) on the European test cycle — ideal for daily commutes and short trips. Charging options include 6.6 kW AC as standard, 11 kW AC optional, and 50 kW DC fast charging that can take the battery from 10% to 80% in just 30 minutes.

Renault also includes vehicle-to-load (V2L) and vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, allowing owners to power devices or even return energy to the grid — rare features in this price bracket.

Safety and Technology

The Twingo E-Tech doesn’t skimp on safety or driver assistance. It offers up to 24 driver-assist systems, including adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, automated parking, cyclist and pedestrian detection, safe-exit alerts, and rear cross-traffic warnings.

Renault emphasizes that despite its affordability, the Twingo E-Tech delivers big-car safety in a small package, making it one of the most advanced A-segment EVs in its class.

Sustainable, European, and Built for the City

Built in Slovenia, the Twingo E-Tech is proudly European-made and designed with sustainability at its core. Renault claims the car’s production has a 60% smaller carbon footprint than comparable gasoline city cars.

The automaker also boasts that the project went from concept to production in just two years, thanks to the brand’s dedicated EV division, Ampere.

Renault expects the new Twingo E-Tech to arrive in early 2026, serving as an affordable alternative to rising Chinese city EVs and a smart choice for European drivers seeking a practical, eco-friendly vehicle for urban life.

Final Thoughts

The 2026 Renault Twingo E-Tech represents a return to what made small cars special — fun, efficient, affordable, and full of character. It doesn’t chase luxury or performance numbers but focuses on what most people actually need for everyday driving.

In a market increasingly filled with oversized SUVs, the new Twingo is a refreshing reminder that smaller can be smarter. With its sub-€20,000 price, zippy electric motor, and nostalgic charm, the Renault Twingo E-Tech might just spark a new wave of affordable EVs in Europe’s cities.
